NEWS

Melissa Holowaty, PhD, MD, MSc, CCFP(AM)

Dr Holowaty is originally from Saskatchewan but left to attend University. She is happy to be back home after many years away.

University and Medical Training

She is a medical graduate of the University of Toronto Medicine Program (2008) and also completed both her Doctoral thesis in Molecular Genetics as well as her family medicine residency at the University of Toronto. She has a Masters degree in the area of Palliative Care from the University of Maryland and a CCFP certificate in Addiction Medicine.

Somatic and Psychotherapy Training

She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and a member of EMDRIA. She is a certified yoga instructor through the Yoga Therapy Studio in Toronto.  She is certified in the Mindfulness Based Chronic Pain Management program from NeuroNova Centre. Her psycho-therapeutic approach is somatically and mindfulness informed because of these roots, and she continues to learn in the areas of EMDR and polyvagal theory.

Approach

With this background, she endeavors to provide a holistic approach to mental health, chronic pain, and substance use, particularly for other healthcare providers, military, and first responders. She became particularly invested in this population after being a Caduceus facilitator and working at Edgewood, when she was in Ontario.

Current Practice

She currently provides psychotherapy in her private office and works at the University of Saskatchewan Chronic Pain Clinic.

Dr Holowaty is the past and current Chair of the Member Interest Group in Addiction Medicine at the College of Family Physicians of Canada and co-author of the CFPC publication for family physicians on substance use in primary care - https://www.cfpc.ca/en/education-professional-development/practice-tools-guidelines/practical-approach-to-substance-use-disorders
